Summer Surprise Blog Tour - Give Away

First things first:
HAPPY 2nd BIRTHDAY to my little miss Miracle!

and also happy 1st birthday to Sofilantjes Patterns!

Lately I've been quite active in sewing Sofilantjes patterns... So when a call for a Blog Tour popped up in the Facebook group, I immediately volunteered to be part of it. I had never done a Blog Tour before, so when I received notice that I was part of the Summer Surprise Anniversary Tour, I was very excited.

The timing for this Blog Tour was fantastic, since we also have a Birthday to celebrate this week! And as for the name of the pattern: it couldn't be more perfect, since little miss Miracle came to us as a complete surprise one month early. Born in a night of the full moon... in the middle of Spring instead of at the beginning of Summer... giving us quite a scare and having almost lost her. The story ends very well though, as you can see!

Back to the Blog Tour! We were given the choice whether to make the Summer Surprise as it was intended in the pattern or do something different with it. Well, I was up for a challenge!

The pattern is designed for knit fabrics...
I decided to make a Summer Surprise with a woven fabric. But not only a woven fabric, I also wanted to do a mash-up. I chose the Bubble Dress by Straight Grain, because I've wanted to make that dress forever & this seemed like the perfect opportunity.

Around that time I followed the blog about the new Soft Cactus fabrics & immediately fell in love with the Vivid Blue Beeswax series. Ordering the specific fabric that I wanted in a nearby store turned out easy, but the store closed for a week a day after the release of the fabrics... No worries though, I first made a test-dress & looking back on it, that was a pretty good decision!

Onto the dress!

Working with a woven fabric, sizing up was recommended. Although little miss Miracle turns 2 today, she still wears a size 12 months, sometimes 18 months. A size 2T would've been way too big, so I used the pattern for 18 months.
I cut & taped the patterns of the Summer Surprise & Bubble Dress together, which meant I now had a bodice & skirt part. The skirt part is actually the skirt of the Bubble Dress. The bodice is the Summer Surprise, but widened to fit the skirt. I also left out the small pleat in the front.
To be able to fit the dress over her head I added kamsnaps buttons on top. I got inspired by this pattern... which I used for her Birthday dress from last year

Because the main fabric is a very light weight cotton & the blue lining was showing through the main fabric; so the bodice now has 2 layers of main yellow fabric.

The bow on the back is stitched between the main fabric and the lining.
I did this by top-stitching the neckline and the armholes( which actually is one long stitch-line) after putting the whole dress together.

Showing off her new dress, I noticed it's a bit wide. Nevertheless I'm very happy with the result & so is she!
She adores the color yellow, but initially I planned to make this dress in a blue fabric (Tree Topping). When I came home from the store, she started yelling "MINE" & pointing to the yellow one (Star Flight) I had bought for her big sister. You gotta love the child that knows what she wants!

Of course I made a matching birthday-crown!
I make it with the same pattern every year. This year's crown will probably fit her for the next few years... but I'm sure I'll make a new one next year... it has to match her dress, right?

Although the dress might even fit her next year as well, I'm still pretty sure I'm going to make a new outfit...
Can't help it... I'm hooked!

Another birthday...
I can't forget about big sis, miss Wonder. She makes sure I do!
Her 6th birthday was in February. One of the gifts received was a T-shirt, that turned out to be an adult/teen size S. The perfect upcycling project for this anniversary tour!!! After all, we're celebrating birthdays, right?

It's a great play-garment & it has a sporty look because of the added fabric to the sides.

The T-shirt was a bit tight (the pattern, a size 7T, was wider then the shirt) and not long enough to make a dress of it. Miss Wonder has a bit of a tummy, so I was worried that a top might have been too short.
After an initial fitting it looked a bit tight around the waist indeed, so I decided to widen it by adding some fabric between the front and back.

The tunic suits her perfectly. After fitting the finished tunic, she didn't want to take it off anymore, even though it got a bit chilly.

I top-stiched all bindings with a twin-needle... it's a personal preference.

A Note about the pattern:
The Summer Surprise Dress-Tunic-Top was the first pattern released by Sofilantjes, exactly one year ago - hence the Anniversary Blog Tour!
The past year the designer, Annemieke, has enhanced the layouts of her patterns. To celebrate the first anniversary of Sofilantjes, she has updated the Summer Surprise pattern. For all of you who have already purchased the pattern, you can get the updated version. The new format can be downloaded from your account. If you bought it on Etsy, won the pattern or tested it, you can e-mail to info@sofilantjes.com ; the subject needs to be "summer surprise" and you need to e-mail a proof of payment or copy of Sofilantjes e-mail. The pattern itself did not change. Just the format!

The Summer Surprise (individual patterns) will be on sale from the start of the tour until May 30. You will get 25% off on the Sofilantjes-website
You need to use the code: anniversary
